Aune Kallinen (1975-) is a theatre director, a performance artist and a teacher,
living in Hangist, Finland. They work as a lecturer of contemporary performance at the Theatre Academy of the University
of the Arts Helsinki from 2012 and as the head of the center for Joint Studies at
the same University from 2015. They also work as stage artist, directing,
performing and collaborating.
In all Aunes' artistic work political, corporeal and meditative
qualities are present, and the (power) relationships between audience/performers
is somehow questioned. They are
interested in creating performative structures that enable polyphony and the
autonomous creation of the dramaturgies of the performers/actors as well as other
collaborators. They are also curious in investigating the boundaries between
and inside of bodies and the communication with non-humans and invisible
realities, just to mention few. Their way of doing performances includes practices
from live art to somatics, and to wide range of critical theories around social
and natural sciences.
As a teacher Aune aim to support the students
towards their own interests and challenge them to take risks and to try the
impossible. Their interdisciplinary workshops orbit around actual themes as the
end of capitalism, sexuality, witch- and bitchcrafts, cellular breathing and
the structure of the pluriverse, and on a practical level create tools and
methods for performance making crossing the borders of different disciplines
and professional identities. The ethics of their pedagogy are built on a notion
“we are always many” (Donna Haraway and others), and they make room and
facilitate polyphony, simultaneity, not-knowing, listening and wondering in all
their teaching.
Aune has been active with organizing and/or
participating alternative theatre-festivals in Finland like TheatreNow!
(Kiasma, the museum of modern art), Theatre Meeting of Kajaani and Performance
Art Hall, and is one of the founders of The Artistic Theatre of Helsinki as
well as the performance group In other spaces and international contact
improvisation festival Skiing on Skin. At the university of the Arts Helsinki
they have been collaborating with many organizations and institutions as well
as with innumerable artists worldwide, and they are responsible for several new
openings and projects, such as getting a two -year pilot-program “MA in ecology and
contemporary performance” started 2016 at the University of the Arts and
creating a new ecological and site-specific art happening Island2020 in
Helsinki in collaboration with Fine Arts Academy.
Aune is building an alternative meeting-space for artists and activists at the countryside in Southern Finland in an old school for common people, where they also currently live and take care of their garden with their partner, brother and three kids.
